![]() ![]() ![]() The story alternates between the third-person origin story of the four women, and a first person account of the present day mayhem told by Billie, who was recruited and trained with the others. So they have to go on the run and figure out what to do to stay alive and find out who ordered their deaths. But they spot someone on board who they know works for the same organization, and they realize that they have been targeted for elimination. There’s also a lot of on-page murder, but because everyone who is dispatched is quite terrible, it didn’t bother me too much, especially not when they hunt nazis.Īt the beginning of this story, Billie, Helen, Natalie and Mary Alice are on an all-expenses paid cruise to celebrate their retirement from killing lots of terrible people. There’s a lot of chemistry, both literal and interpersonal, murder, plotting, hunting, and scheming. Killers of a Certain Age is a sharp mix of heist, thriller, mystery, and the type of story where, besides all that action, the four main characters are shifting from one phase of their lives to another. ![]()

He shatters the misconception that Rome built the first roads in Gaul and Britain, describing the well-maintained long-distance routes used by the Celts to move around their territories. However, through use of celestial mathematics, etymology, geometry, mapping and a charming measure of common sense, Robb reveals a clear picture of a culture that has been buried by the Roman conquest. “Tribes who used perishable materials where Romans used stone, and who recorded their histories in nothing more durable then brain tissue, are unlikely to be seen as sophisticated precursors of the modern world,” writes the author. ![]() The author is a refreshing new voice in a canon of outdated, barbaric perceptions of an ingeniously advanced society and endlessly recycled quotes from Tacitus, Caesar or Cicero. When planning a bicycle route through the Alps of central Europe, Robb ( The Discovery of France, 2007, etc.) discovered a sophisticated ancient Celtic landscape that called for nothing short of a revision of ancient history. ![]() ![]() ![]() This series is set in the United States of Anarchy universe. There are a couple of things I would’ve personally done differently. Because, of course, the nice, shy, cutesy guy is my favorite. Autumn was well-written even if she was a bit annoying at times. The characters felt unique, well thought out, and completely individualistic when it came to quirks, emotions, and driving forces. ![]() It just peeved me.Ĭharacter-wise? This book landed right on the mark. It honestly drove me a little mad and I cannot even begin to explain the reason why. Instead of saying “can’t,” it would be cannot. For one thing, inner thoughts, writings, and anything that wasn’t dialogue had no contractions. I don’t know if that’s because Laura Nowlin was trying to make it sound more like the main character, Autumn, but to me, it just felt forced with writing. However, some of the writing to me felt so monotone and just… flat. ![]() With the writing specifically, I thought it was beautifully written and very in tune to its main character. The Goblin Emperor upends standard fantasy by shifting the importance of its components. Magic exists but plays a minor role relegated to the background to fill out the world. Yet, these belie what the novel is at its heart: a coming-of-age story filled with political intrigue. ![]() The Goblin Emperor by Katherine Addison is many things a novel about elves and goblins, a story with mages and magic, and a book with a steampunk aesthetic. ![]() ![]() PorchĪn equestrian estate of this magnitude requires ample opportunity for experiencing nature, and the property offers several porches and patios for savoring the outdoors.
